Congratulations! I’ve gifted you the ability to level up. Here’s how to do it, and things to watch for. I’ll be using a Cleric as an example, as they have the most stuff per level and the party has 2 of these.
Overview
The main things you need to check are
- Class Features
- Don’t forget subclass!
- Spells
- Stats
Class Features
Each class will get certain things at each level. Using the class table will tell you basically everything you need to know. These are found on your class’s main page, and they all look pretty similar.
Find the new level parts and update them. For cleric level 4 for example, you see that they get an Ability Score Improvement (every class has this same level 4 ability). For us, that means choosing another General feat. Your call!
Reminder
When you choose a feat, you will get a +1 to a certain ability based on the feat. If this goes from an odd to an even number, your modifier goes up +1, and your skills that relate to that increase by +1 too! This includes spell save DC and attack bonus if it’s that ability.
Spells
Using the same table, you can prepare another spell and get another spell slot (or 2). Add those to your spells list and choose your new prepared spell.
If you are multiclassing, talk to me if you don’t fully know what you’re doing. Spells get wonky when multiclassing
Stats
- HP increases by 1 roll of your HP die (1d8, 1d10, etc). You also get another hit die (3→4 would be 3d8 to 4d8)
- Skills - As mentioned with the feat, if your modifiers increase at all, this will change your skills modifiers and saving throws
- AC - If a modifier for your AC (likely dex) increases, your AC might change. Double check this based on the armor you’re wearing
- Proficiency Bonus - This is important! When your proficiency bonus increases, you increase the following things by +1
- Saving throws you are proficient in (filled in bubble)
- Skills you are proficient in (filled in bubble)
- All weapon attack bonus & damage they do
- Spell Save DC & attack bonus
- Any ability dependent/level dependent features
- Things like lay on hands, which uses your level, or some magic items or features change based on an ability modifier may get another “charge” if increased
If your class has other things that increase, go ahead! Ask me if you’re not sure
Race Stuff
Sometimes your race will get extra stuff when you hit certain levels. Elves are the most common of this
